Why 60 Was the Perfect Time to Start Over
By Tangye Ward
I used to think starting over was something you did in your twenties — maybe your thirties if life took a few detours. But 60? That was supposed to be the beginning of slowing down. Retiring. Settling.
Instead, 60 became the moment I hit reset — and found a version of myself I’d never really met before.
Letting Go of What Was
For years, I poured myself into work that was structured, predictable, and often centered around others’ needs. I was good at it. I was proud of it. But deep down, I also felt like I had more to give — and more to say.
When I stepped away from that life, it wasn’t easy. Letting go of security, routine, and titles can feel like losing a part of yourself. But I learned that sometimes the thing you’re afraid to let go of is the very thing holding you back.
Reclaiming My Voice
Starting over at 60 meant tuning into my own voice — not the noise around me. I picked up writing again, leaned into my love for style, and began freelancing. I took courses, explored digital tools, and reconnected with my creative side.
I wasn’t trying to prove anything. I just wanted to express myself in a way that felt true. And with every word I wrote and every new challenge I accepted, I started to feel more alive.
Why 60 Was the Right Time
Here’s the truth: I couldn’t have done this in my 30s. Back then, I was too busy surviving, pleasing, and checking boxes.
Now, I know who I am. I understand my value. I don’t need permission to pivot — I just need passion, purpose, and a little patience with myself.
There’s something incredibly freeing about building something at this stage in life. The pressure is off. The intention is deeper. The confidence is earned.
What I’ve Learned
- It’s never too late to begin again.
- Starting over isn’t failure — it’s freedom.
- Your age isn’t a limitation. It’s a superpower.
If you’re reading this and wondering whether you still can — yes, you can. And you’re not alone.
